Employment
This is what Wikipedia say of Employment:
Employment is a relationship between two parties, usually based on a contract where work is paid for, where one party, which may be a corporation, for profit, not-for-profit organization, co-operative or other entity is the employer and the other is the employee.
I dont know about you, but I have been seeking a whole heap more than this from my work. I want to belong and to learn and to laugh and to grow and be valued and have responsibility. I want my work to be diverse and to have (some!), challenges and to be of some kind of value. I want to see that my work makes some kind of difference in the world: be that to people or places or things.
When I was a cleaner, I adored leaving my employer‘s home transformed. When I was a waitress I loved the connection with good customers. When I worked in personal development I chased that moment when a person suddenly realised they were ten times the person they had believed that they were.
Sure, work is about money and keeping a roof over you head and providing for those you love. Work is also about a real exchange. We trade our time for money, and our time is very, very valuable. I think this is why we need to be contributing to something bigger than ourselves that brings value to the world too. There needs to be symbiosis in this equation if it is to be sustainable. If you consider your current role, what do you bring and what more than money do you earn? If you could earn more than money, what might that be? Because employment takes up such a large part of each and every day, it needs to reward us in a multitude of ways.
