Could You Benefit From Career Counselling?
Recently I received a disarmingly honest request from a client for ‘a combination of career advice, coaching and career counselling please”. I was eager to meet this individual because this request summarised exactly what is needed, in differing proportions, within this career coaching remit.
However much you may wish it, it is nigh on impossible to address “Your Career’ as a separate entity from ‘You’. We are all integrated human beings and, if we make a change in one of our facets, then it will reflect in all the others. You know that work can impact your life. Similarly, if you have difficulties in your relationship, with your children, or with your finances, then these will show up in your work-life too.
Career Counselling?
So I can guarantee that, whilst the focus of this work will be centred around your career, your CPD and your next professional steps, we will also be taking a look at all the other facets of your existence. This way we can develop an integrated solution to the challenges you are facing. If your work is impacting on your life, we can work to manage that. If your life is impacting on your work then we can design strategies together that you can use to attend to this too. Whatever you changes you choose to make, you will also need to reference your past, in order to inform your future, even if it is merely in order to find out what to do differently……
“Whatever changes you choose to make, you will need to seek the buy-in of those around you.”
Whatever changes you choose to make, you will need to seek the buy-in of those around you. Work might need to take priority for a while and, in this case, you will need to contract this with your family members so that they understand the purpose. If you life is taking a different turn, then, work also might need a glimpse of what you are facing. Keep your boss informed and your process will not simply be labelled “poor work performance”, but, it can held and valued for what it is, a process that will feed your CPD in the long run.
Our different roles: parent, employee, business person, lover, partner, et. al. all feed into one-another when they are all lining up. This process might take little more time than just rewriting the CV, but, the CV you will write as a result will be so much stronger and more saleable.
